HISTORY

World War Memorial Stadium, located behind Newburyport High School in Newburyport, Massachusetts, was built nearly 70 years ago. As part of the Emergency Works Progress Bill, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a landmark labor initiative that put more than 3.5 million men and young boys to work on war-time projects across the country to help them support their families. The construction of the stadium and the wall that still surrounds the high school are two of the more visible WPA projects in this area.

Today, this historic structure—the site of thousands of local high school and youth sporting events over the years and a lasting monument to those men and women who gave their lives for their county—is at risk. Several years ago, the City closed the visitors’ side of the stadium, citing health and safety concerns.
